Amazingly candid article about the fats we use in today's cooking and frying

I ran across this amazing article about the foods we eat, use and consume.  It's frightening what big business forces us to consume.

'The truth about chips was the most disgusting thing I've learnt during this series'- Philip Boucher Hayes

It talks about trying to eat healthy when we are addicted to convenient food which is full of:

"First off, the oil used for frying is called RBD, which means refined, bleached and deodorised. Refining involves using solvents and acids, following which it has to be bleached to alter its visually unappealing dark colour and deodorised.. well, you get the picture."

Manufacturers do whatever is necessary to make their oils last as long as possible for repeated use.

"This requires the addition to the oil of a cocktail of anti-coagulating, anti-foaming and anti-spattering agents that would leave a chemistry PhD scratching his or her head. Butylated hydroxyanisole, anyone"

"...it doesn't have to go on the label. Relatively new laws lobbied for by the food industry mean chemicals used in processes, as distinct from actual ingredients, don't have to be listed."

Unfortunatly the show (What Are You Eating?: Using you loaf when it comes to bread) is in th UK, but hopefully I can find it on the internet and post it for you.

Mary Washington Multicultural Festival

Today we will be at Mary Washington College at the George Washington Hall's Grand Ballroom.

Due to the rain, the venue has been moved indoors and space has been cut in half.  I will try to fit most of our products on one table.

The venue will be open 10 am to 3pm.  Come on down to see us and our new product line and scents!!

Happy New Year!

Hello all my lovely friend!

This year will see some wonderful changes.  I'm trying some new shows.  Our first of the season will be:

Dover Days, Dover, DE

So, looking forward to that show.  Slowly getting stock ready.

We now have an abundant supply of Unscented Coconut Soap, which was one of our biggest sellers last season.  Currently curing is GOAT MILK CASTILE!  Isn't that an awesome idea?

Current Project

Working on homemade laundry detergent AND Shampoo!

I've tried several recipes I found online using Fels Naptha, Borax and Washing Soda.

In the last 6 months I've had to THROW OUT ALL my face cloths, t-shirts, hand towels and bath towels!  Why do you ask?

1) EVERYTHING repelled water.  The water beaded off.  Couldn't dry off, wipe up spills or dry hands.  YUCK!

2) Grey, dingy whites.  No amount of bleach could help. It actually caused the t-shirts to shred!

WASTE of money, time and resources; but it'll save YOU money from my trial and errors!

Working on liquid shampoo using Molasses Stout and Silk with Chamomile & Rose Water.  Just waiting for them to cure before I start the arduous process of making an awesome shampoo!

I promise to keep you updated to my adventures!
